Tragic96.Com Personality Profile

"Harriet Coffey"

(The First Lady of Charlotte Radio)

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas and raised in New Britain, Connecticut, Harriet Coffey is the proud mother of one son, Ryan, a graduate of the University of Delaware with a degree in psychology. Community minded like his mother, Ryan is a social worker for the state of Connecticut.

Before her successful move to Charlotte, Ms. Coffey's radio days began in the early seventies as a student newscaster at Central Connecticut State College. Harriet's diverse broadcasting experience entails a variety of on-air positions, including news reporter and afternoon drive anchor at Hartford, Connecticut’s WKND-AM Radio. Always wanting to share her love of music, Harriet steered her career in a more entertainment-oriented direction with air personality stints at Little Rock, Arkansas’s 50,000 watt KAAY-AM and KLPQ-FM, Atlanta’s WQXI-FM, Philadelphia's
WWSH-FM, and Charlotte’s WWMG-FM, acquiring skills along the way as Production Director, Copywriter, and Continuity Director.   Harriet’s most recent radio assignment is Monday through Friday from 10 am to 3 pm on 95.7FM - THE RIDE in Charlotte.  She began working with THE RIDE last year on her birthday, November, 19.

Market research has shown that Ms. Coffey's name recognition is second only to that of a nationally syndicated morning team, with good reason. Harriet's sincerity, warmth, and excellent sense of humor attract all demographics. The attraction grew stronger in 1998 when Harriet returned to the airwaves victorious in her fight against a rare cancer of the appendix that kept her out of work for nearly a year. Harriet Coffey’s comeback was so significant to Charlotte and vicinity that it was the feature story on The Charlotte Observer's front page, February 19, 1998.

As a seven-year cancer survivor, Harriet Coffey proudly speaks on behalf of The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Concerned former listeners continue to e-mail Harriet with questions regarding her health. Even in writing, her positive spirit shines through as she replies, "Each morning that I wake up on the top side of the grass is one fine day.  Life is good!"

Community involvement is another aspect of Harriet’s personality that Charlotte and vicinity find appealing.  As one appreciative listener puts it, “What sets her apart is that Harriet helps out of concern and sincerity, not because she is looking for publicity.”  Among the many civic organizations for which Harriet has volunteered is the Assistance League of Charlotte. The group funds free books, clothes, and school snacks for under-privileged children in the Mecklenburg County area.

Harriet Coffey's audience appeal knows no bounds. As a freelance announcer her voice work includes everything from commercials to documentaries and can be heard on radio and television. As a professional speaker, Ms. Coffey is a compelling orator with a motivational message of positive, constructive thinking. With masterful communicative skills transcending all barriers, Harriet’s mellifluous vocal quality and amazing one‑to‑one rapport with her audience enable all in attendance to feel as if she focuses her undivided attention on each individual. Editor's Note:  The "First Lady of Charlotte Radio," Harriet Coffey pictured at far left with Gary US Bonds at the 1999 Magic 96.1 Jingle Bell Hop and with Lou Rawls on the right, spent 13 years at Magic.  She left Magic unexpectedly shortly before Thanksgiving 2001 in a shocking move by management which left staff and audience bewildered.  Almost three years after her exit people still were calling the station asking, "What happened to Harriet?"  In fact they are even emailing us with the same question!  That's a great testament to the fact that Harriet is a true radio personality and not just another record spinner.  Harriet's "Coffey Break" and "All Request Lunch" were two of the longest running and most profitable features ever aired on Magic 96.1!  Harriet is now heard Monday through Friday from 10 AM until 3 PM on 95.7 FM, "The Ride."  Harriet Coffey is  unquestionably the most popular female radio personality ever in the Carolinas and she's nowhere near done!  Ed.
